Long pepper is a slender, climber with perennial woody roots, creeping and jointed stems, and fleshy fruits embedded in the spikes. Belonging to the piperaceae family, the long pepper fruit consists of tiny berries, which merges into a single, rod-like structure that bears some resemblance to the flowers of trees like hazelnutorwillow.
Long pepper contains very less essential oil (Only 1%)

Applications :

In India, long pepper is used to treat diseases of the respiratory tract like Cough, bronchitis, asthma, etc. It is also used as a counter-irritant and an analgesic when applied locally for muscular pains and inflammation. Long pepper is also used in preparation of general health tonics.

In Morocco, Long pepper is sometimes found in complex spice mixtures as ‘ras el hanout’. In Ethiopia, Long pepper is found traditionally in meat stews together with black pepper, nutmeg and cloves and is especially used to flavor mutton dishes

In Europe. Long Pepper was used before the now dominant black pepper and was ideal for Roman cuisine requiring two taste sensation giving both ‘pungent’ as well as ‘sweet’ characteristics.
